Maintaining Pumps and Filters

Introduction
The circulation pump and filter are the “heart” of any pool system. Without adequate flow rate and efficient filtration, water quality and sanitation can quickly deteriorate.

Essential Tips

  • Choosing the right pump size: Calculate by dividing the pool volume by the desired turnover time (e.g., 6 hours for large pools).
  • Higher flow for small pools: In a children’s pool, turnover might be 2 hours, meaning a relatively higher flow rate is required.
  • Backwash schedule: When flow rate drops by ~20% from normal, or if the filter pressure gauge shows a significant increase, perform a backwash to clear the filter media.
